For the Tofu:
- Firm tofu, drained and pressed
- 2 tablespoons cornstarch
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil (for frying)
For the Tomato Sauce:
- 1 tablespoon oil
- Bean sauce
- soya sauce
- 1 medium onion, finely chopped
- 2-3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 can (400 g or 14 oz) crushed tomatoes (or fresh tomatoes, diced)
- 1 teaspoon sugar (to balance acidity)
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- Fresh basil or parsley for garnish (optional)
